Vapour Permeability A surprising problem with plastics, rubber & polymers

The perception that plastics and rubber are good at keeping liquid water out is true.  However, where there is water there is water vapour and many materials simply aren't up to the job of keeping it out.  Some materials allow hundreds of times more water vapour through than others and some, such as silicone, cellulose, EVOH and PVOH are so poor at this that they might as well not be there at all!

To make matters even worse, the manufacturing process itself can quadruple the amount of vapour that permeates through the material. If you want to keep water out the only answer is testing and the solution to this is Versaperm.

With Versaperm, measuring this permeability effect has become hundreds of times faster and more accurate – and not just for water vapour but also for most other gases including hydrocarbons, oxygen, CO2 and nitrogen.  The need to determine this is extremely widespread as it affects the performance of almost every plastic, rubber, composite or polymer component.  Permeability also affects a material's other physical characteristics, sometimes dramatically, including strength, handling, resistance, print quality and the way they perform in general.

Quantifying permeability is the key to reducing many widespread problems – such as medications that lose potency though their packaging, electronics that fails or food that goes stale too quickly.

Versaperm's permeability equipment gives an accuracy that is typically measured in the parts per million range, (parts per billion with some gases).  The system is ideal for testing, development work and QC on plastics, rubber, components, containers, films coatings and components.

As well as manufacturing the instruments, Versaperm offers a permeability laboratory service for companies that need to test samples on an irregular basis
